Fairfieldite is not common from the Foote Mine pegmatite and the locality has produced what is generally considered by collectors to be the largest and best-of-species specimens. Fairfieldite is a hydrated calcium-manganese phosphate sometimes found as a secondary alteration product in granite pegmatites, as in this case; and in some sedimentary deposits. This particular piece is excellent as it resembles a small "snowman" with two distinctly rounded botryoids of translucent white to grayish Fairfieldite with the top sphere measuring 1.9 cm across and the top one 1.5 cm. This is a highly unusual morphology for the species. This miniature should be ranked as one of the better miniatures for the species, given its color, aesthetics and excellent condition. Formerly in the Jack Eaker collection: Jack was the mine assayist during the heyday of its working life in the 1970s and 1980s, and built what is universally considered to be the finest collection of Foote Mine minerals. He sold part of his collection to us many years ago.
