Montgomeryite is a rare calcium-magnesium-aluminum phosphate and the Tip Top Mine has produced the world's best and most colorful specimens as well as the first pegmatite occurrence for the species. Captivating, transparent to translucent red, lustrous clusters of bladed Montgomeryite crystals from 1 to 3 mm cover much of the display face and are accompanied by colorless to white, translucent to transparent, less than 0.5 mm rhombs of Whitlockite that provide contrast and additional interest to this specimen! On one end of the piece there is a large, 1.5 cm patch of black-brown, microcrystalline Todorokite, a complex, manganese-bearing, highly hydrated alkali and alkaline earth-bearing oxide. An exceptional and rich piece of these rare phosphates from this well-known secondary phosphate locale that hasn't produced any specimens since the late 1980s and the pit is now filled with water. Collected in the 1980s. We will probably never see this material again, and it is not only world's best of species, but is truly one of the most beautiful minerals you will ever look at under a scope. Purchased from Chris Korpi (Pangaea Minerals in 2000). This is a rich and beautiful miniature of superior quality.
