A very good example for the species from this old European locality. Groupings of colorless lustrous slightly translucent cerussite measuring to 3.0 cm in size covering the top of matrix with minor calcite and galena. This is in very good condition. A previous label comes with the specimen from the old company Minerals Unlimited. This is shown at the end of the video. The Bleiberg mining district, located in Carinthia, Austria, is one of the most historically significant lead-zinc deposits in Europe and the namesake for the Bleiberg-type Mississippi Valley Type (MVT) deposits. Geologically, the mineralization is hosted within Triassic carbonate rocks, specifically the Wetterstein limestone and dolomite, where metal-rich hydrothermal fluids deposited galena, sphalerite, and the world-famous orange wulfenite crystals in fractures and solution cavities. Historically, mining in the region dates back to the Roman era and possibly earlier, with documented continuous operations beginning in the 14th century. The district saw massive industrial expansion during the 19th and 20th centuries under the management of the Bleiberger Bergwerks-Union (BBU). After more than 700 years of documented production, the mines officially closed in 1993 due to the exhaustion of economic ore bodies and falling metal prices. Today, the town of Bad Bleiberg has transitioned into a spa and tourism destination, though it remains a legendary locality for mineral collectors worldwide.
