Hutchinsonite with Realgar, Orpiment
Metallic crystalline and massive hutchinsonite across the top of a dolomite matrix with minor orpiment and realgar. A neat historical example for the species, the specimen comes with an antique label as shown at the end of the video and dates to the very early 20th century.Hutchinsonite is a rare thallium lead arsenic sulfide mineral that occurs in low temperature hydrothermal vein deposits. This is the type locality for the species and was named in honor of the British mineralogist Arthur Hutchinson. The mineral typically forms slender dark red to brown crystals and is usually found with other rare sulfosalt minerals. The Lengenbach Quarry in the Binn Valley of Valais, Switzerland is a famous mineral locality known for rare thallium bearing sulfosalt minerals. The quarry works a dolomite deposit that contains thin mineralized layers where numerous uncommon species occur. Systematic collecting and scientific study have been carried out there for many years under controlled conditions. The locality is well known among mineral collectors and researchers for producing many rare mineral species found in few other places.
