Acanthite
Wonderful example from this old classic European locality with a crystal grouping of metallic semi lustrous acanthite measuring 1.5 cm in height coming off matrix with minor nickeline. The specimen comes with an antique label as shown at the end of the video and would date to the very early 20th century. Mining at St Joachimsthal, now known as Jachymov in the Czech Republic, began in the early 16th century with the discovery of rich silver deposits in hydrothermal veins hosted in metamorphic rocks. The town quickly became one of the most important silver mining centers in Europe, and coins minted there, called joachimsthalers, gave rise to the word dollar. In later centuries the district also produced uranium minerals, which led to early research on radioactivity and the discovery of radium by Marie Curie using material from the area. Although large scale mining has ceased, Jachymov remains historically significant for its role in silver production, coinage history, and the development of nuclear science.
