Autunite, Meta-autunite
Autunite/meta-autunite, 8.4 cm, from the Cunha Baixa mine, Portugal; collected in August 1975. This small uranium mine in Portugal once yielded one of the most spectacular pockets I have ever seen. It was about 5 by 3 meters and the walls were covered with fresh crystals of autunite/meta-autunite up to 3 cm! As it was a uranium mine, which required permits, they only let us keep a few specimens. When we returned a short time later with the necessary permits, the vug had disappeared. They had destroyed it to avoid problems, as others without permits had entered the mine facilities. This piece was one I picked up easily on my first visit, and it serves as a modest sample of what I saw that day.
