Franklinite
Franklinite, 29.2-cm matrix with 9.5-cm crystal, from the Sterling Hill mine, Ogdensburg, Sussex County, New Jersey. This specimen, found in 1990 on the 750-foot level of the Sterling Hill mine by Richard Hauck, was purchased while the franklinite was still largely obscured. When Dick (known for both his superb collection and his quick wit) was later shown the fully prepared specimen with the large Franklin crystal exposed, he said “Don’t come whining to me for a refund.” Illustrated in Leavens and Berrett (1997).
