Lead, pyrochroite
Lead (gray) with pyrochroite (black), 15.2 cm with crystals to 2.5 cm, from Långban, Filipstad, Varmland, Sweden. Långban is the world’s most important locality for crystallized native lead, and the source of many other very rare species. It may have been worked as early as the 15th century, but was systematically exploited from 1711 to 1972. The metamorphosed manganese-iron deposit has yielded over 300 different mineral species, 30 of them new to science.
