From the classic locality for the species, nice branching lead gray crystallized native lead with pyrochroite. This is in great condition. The specimen comes with a series of previous labels, these are shown at the end of the video. The Langban mining district, located in Varmland, Sweden, is an internationally famous mineralogical locality renowned for its remarkable diversity of rare species, including exceptional specimens of native lead. Geologically, the deposit is a metamorphosed, strata-bound iron-manganese ore body hosted within Paleoproterozoic dolostones and marbles, where intense regional metamorphism and hydrothermal activity created highly specialized, low-oxygen geochemical environments. Under these unique conditions, native lead precipitated as malleable sheets, wires, and rare crystalline aggregates, often found within calcite veins or associated with manganese oxides like hausmannite. Historically, mining and quarrying operations at Langban began in the 15th century, with formal extraction recorded as early as 1513, initially targeting iron ore and later shifting to manganese. The mine was worked continuously for centuries until the exhaustion of economic ore bodies led to its permanent closure in 1972, though small-scale specimen recovery from the extensive dump piles has continued through 2026.Lawrence Conklin was a world-renowned mineral dealer based in New York City, widely regarded as one of the most knowledgeable and sophisticated figures in the history of the mineral trade. Operating from his office on 5th Avenue and later from his home in Connecticut, Conklin specialized in "antique" minerals and specimens with significant historical provenance. He was a meticulous researcher and an elegant writer, often publishing articles that corrected historical errors in mineralogical literature. His career spanned over five decades, during which he handled some of the finest known specimens from classic European and American localities, setting a high standard for aesthetic quality and documentation in the field.John S. Albanese was a prominent American mineral dealer who operated a highly regarded mail-order business, John S. Albanese Fine Minerals, from his base in Union, New Jersey, during the mid-20th century. Historically, he became widely known within the geological and hobbyist communities for distributing well-selected, systematic, and display-grade mineral specimens accompanied by typed, detailed locality data. His periodic sales catalogs, issued during the 1950s and 1960s, served as a primary acquisition source for advanced private collectors and institutional museums across North America.
