Pyrite and calcite, 15.2 cm, from the Moss Bay mine near Bigrigg, West Cumberland Iron Field, Cumbria, England. The Moss Bay mine is nearest to the town and therefore may be the oldest. The Bigrigg mines are more known for big calcite crystal clusters and hematite; the pyrite specimen shown here is unusual, and there are none like it in the collection of the Natural History Museum, London.
