Tunellite on Ulexite
While Dan certainly had an eye for cabinet specimens that have exceptional aesthetics, his collection also included truly jaw-dropping examples of more obscure mineral species. This specimen in particular features two massive crystals of Tunellite-an extremely rare, hydrated strontium-borate mineral-that reach up to a whopping 4.7 x 4.2 centimeters, all presented on a large Ulexite matrix. Both Tunellites are blocky, well-formed, colorless, and complete all around with a nice translucence and sub-vitreous luster. Despite its initial earthy appearance, the Ulexite is actually quite fibrous and has a satin-to-matte luster, which is most evident towards the top side of the specimen. This specimen was acquired from Extension 5 of the Boron Open Pit and is a truly remarkable find, considering only a limited selection of Tunellite-Ulexite specimens of this size and orientation were ever brought to market. This piece comes with a custom acrylic base.
