Gratonite is a rare lead-arsenic-sulfide (sulfosalt) originally found at the Cerro de Pasco Mine in Peru in the 1890s and found only much later at the Yunosawa Mine in Japan in 1984. ANY specimen of this species is extremely rare. This particular small cabinet piece is one of the very few we have ever seen turn up for sale from this mine; and it has good contrasting off-white, granular clay in association. The sparkling, metallic gray Gratonite crystals (to 1 mm but sharp) are tightly grouped in a protected pocket in an arcuate cluster along the length of one side of the piece, and are quite pronounced. The area of the Gratonite measures 5.5 x 2.2 cm. The colors, the contrast and composition of the piece makes it attractive for what it is. It is in excellent condition and very rare for the locality. From the collection of Alfredo Petrov (Alfredopetrovite is named in his honor), well-known specialist in both sulfides and in Japanese and Bolivian minerals.
