This is a gem, translucent to transparent, perfectly-formed crystal of the rare mineral species Laurentthomasite, named after a friend of ours in the gem and mineral trade. This is a new gem species, one of the few of modern times! It is therefore both an exceptionally rare mineral AND a newly discovered gemstone, chemically belonging to the milarite group. First discovered in Madagascar in 2018, this is from that first find that produced the type study material, as relayed by Laurent Thomas (it comes with his autographed label). In the gem-cut stones show a cobalt blue to greenish-yellow dichroism, that is also apparent in the crystal when you move it in the lights. Vibrant greenish-blue face-up (on the wide crystal face, as you see here), shifting to deep blue or bright yellow-green due to its strong pleochroism. Very few were found, and fewer yet will ever come back on market for sale.
