This is an excellent small cabinet matrix specimen of senarmontite and is also a significant, historical piece. The specimen is composed of several, isolated, lustrous, gray, translucent, well-formed octahedra from 2 mm to 1.6 cm. The crystals are nicely distributed and isolated in a fine-grained, gray rock matrix. Discovered in 1845, the Djebel Hammimat Mine was the first antimony deposit mined in Algeria and was worked until the middle of 20th century. It also happens to be the type, and by far the best locality, for the species. A venerable old label from the Geological Survey of Tunisia accompanies the piece. Most of these were collected by the French expeditionary and exploratory groups at the time of the late 1800s and early 1900s. This is a very rare matrix specimen, with a superb textbook crystal, AND with provenance to that era!
