Quartz (amethyst), 10.1 cm, from the Margarita mine, Amatitlan, Guerrero, Mexico. Amethyst was first discovered in the hills above Amatitlan around 1930 by a farmer named Donato Retana. Two branches of his family got into a feud over ownership, resulting in many deaths on both sides before ownership was settled. Most of the best specimens in the following years came from the Margarita claim filed by Joaquin Ontiveros.
