This is a very fine small cabinet specimen showing the famous pale-blue glassy Fluorite cubes for which the iron mines around Egremont are famous. Sometimes the Fluorite is sat upon cream coloured Dolomite and other times upon Hematite. This piece from Florence mine shows the latter association, with hundreds of smaller (to 5 mm on edge) pale blue-grey transparent Fluorite crystals richly scattered upon a Specular Hematite-lined cavity within massive reddish-brown Hematite. A further Specularite-lined cavity is seen on the reverse of the specimen but contains no Fluorite. Ex Malcolm Southwood Collection, no. MS 2007.049.
