The discovery of exceptional Andradite crystals in skarns at Serifos Island in the South Aegean Sea offshore from Greece is thought to date back to the 1980s but the number of really fine specimens was never very high. This miniature-sized specimen is not so richly covered as some, but if anything that allows a greater appreciation of the quite magnificent crystal form these individual crystals possess. They have an almost 'crystal model'-like appearance to them and reach up to 8 mm across. It is the dark chocolate-brown rims to the crystal edges that draws the eye the most, and at certain angles, in an optical illusion, these orange-brown dodecahedral crystals look like cubes. These crystals are perched upon a flattish aggregate of buff-coloured altered Hedenbergite.
