Description
A wonderful, old time cabinet specimen of well crystallised Bornite from Carn Brea mine in Illogan, Cornwall. The mine is named for Carn Brea, the elongated granite outcrop between Camborne and Redruth. Carn Brea mine lies near the foot of the northern slope of Carn Brea, almost adjacent to the main London to Penzance railway line. This specimen is accompanied with a Ward's Natural Science Establishment (Rochester, N.Y.) label and carries a suitably old, almost sooty black patina. A solid gnarled mass of metallic Bornite forms the entire specimen, the display surface of which is entirely covered with Bornite crystals, each to a few millimetres across and so forming a botryoidal surface. Occasional iridescent patches highlight some of the crystals in the familiar colours of Bornite's common name, Peacock Ore.
