Description
Fluorite is by no means a common mineral throughout Cornwall, an indication that the Cornubian Batholith was largely fluorine-poor, or more accurately, fluoride-poor, the monatomic anion of fluorine. Many of the mines in the Camborne-Redruth district have produced Fluorite, but not often as high quality specimens. South Crofty, a mine which may potentially recommence operations, has produced a variety of habits and colours, this cabinet specimen being a somewhat ugly but fascinating example. This particular specimen comes from Providence Lode on the 420 fathom Level (2,520 ft) at South Crofty. For those unfamiliar with fathoms, more commonly a nautical measure, one fathom equals six feet. Most of the Fluorite in this specimen is masked by a pervasive coating of micro-crystalline, opaque milky Quartz with a rough, sugary texture and white frosted appearance. The apple green shades of Fluorite are best seen in the base, but hints of green do break through the Quartz in various patches across the display face. The Fluorite forms cubic crystals, the largest almost 4 cm on edge. The cubes are developed either side of a bisecting thin plate of Quartz, itself possibly the remnants of some previous larger epimorph. Although difficult to describe, the Fluorite also forms multiple stacked triangular “books” whose leaves are delineated by thin encrustations of milky Quartz. These features are similar to the cooling fins on a heat sink! Beauty is in the eye of the beholder and I certainly think this an ugly beauty with intriguing crystal habits. This South Crofty Fluorite with Quartz is ex. the Mike Brooke Collection and also comes with an earlier collector’s label dated 20 March, 1997.
Known provenanceKnowing where your specimen comes from and who owned it adds to its story and value. Good provenance helps prove it's authentic and preserves important details about its discovery.
