Description
Minerva No. 1 Mine, Ozark-Mahoning group, Cave-In-Rock Mining Sub-District, Hardin County, Illinois, USA 14.5 x 8.9 x 7.6 cm Fluorite from Southern Illinois is a favorite of many collectors, as it is a classic, beautiful, and collectible locality. Known for the many color and habit variations, there are certain combinations that are substantially more rare than others. “Toadstools” are among these uncommon growths. A toadstool occurs when the original cubic crystal is dissolved away, while the corner, along with the central portion of the original cube remained intact, which creates a “mushroom” appearance. These examples are very rare, with the majority of them being single crystals, that are all yellow. Rarely do a few matrix examples turn up, sometimes with purple colored caps. The rarest mushroom combination is the blue capped examples. This specimen exhibits a stunning blue capped toadstool, that is fully intact, in its original matrix.
