Description
Bethel Level attributed, Cave-in-Rock, Cave-In-Rock Sub-District, Hardin County, Illinois 16.2 x 13.1 x 5.9 cm With the mining sites being owned by the Ozark Mahoning Company, the site of the mine that recovered this piece fell into the geographical region of the Ozark-Mahoning group. Due to the location, some specimens from more obscure localities became mixed in with pieces from the Ozark-Mahoning No. 1 Mine (Minerva No. 1 Mine), and other production areas in the group. Because of this, occasionally specimens would be "lost." This specimen is truly an excellent example from the attributed Bethel Level, as it exhibits rich, warm yellow colors, and mirror-like luster. A unique aspect of this piece is the odd combination of the top luster with the “cityscape” surface textures; rarely are both seen on the single specimen. This piece is also much older, being mined pre-1981, before the last year the Bethel Level was operating. Photographs by Jordan Root
