Aragonite with Adamite (Cuprian)
A large area of rich pockets in 1990-1995, in a difficult to access and long abandoned part of this vast underground mining system, produced these gorgeous greenish Aragonites. They were classics of the day, and I recall seeing flats of small specimens at reasonable prices in Tucson in the late 1990s. We used to see them labelled as Cuprian Aragonites due to the faint pastel green tint in many. However, it turns out that the color is due to inclusion of Cuprian Adamite, and on this piece you actually see little tiny micro-balls of Adamite to prove the point! True, the Adamite color is itself cuprian, or copper-induced, so the old labels were not necessarily wrong. Most specimens were smaller, 2-4 inches in general, easier to recover - as they were recovered off the walls and hauled a long way out. This is an unusually large and complete example, and has the nice green-blue color as well. It has long been kept in the Spiromitros collection. Complete all around, it is simply a beautiful and unusual large display specimen of this style of Aragonite, quite different than what you see from other location. Although it looks gracile and delicate, this can be shipped easily.
