Legrandite with Smithsonite
Legrandite is one of the Holy Grails of collecting attractive rare species and few exceptional specimens of any size range are to be had, and rarely become available. This piece is an exceptional small cabinet specimen that also happens to be a significant combination piece. It consists of a dramatic pair of yellow-orange Legrandite bundles associated with Smithsonite! The two bundles consist of numerous, tightly grouped, slender prismatic, vibrant yellow-orange Legrandite crystals with the largest group measuring 2.7 cm and the other 1.7 cm in length; ALL of the crystals in the tall bundle are perfectly terminated! These are very large for a matrix Legrandite! The two clusters are lustrous and translucent, especially at the ends displaying variegated color ranging from orange-yellow for much of their length to yellow-orange near the tips. Accompanying the Legrandite are bright white, slender, 3 to 4 mm satin-lustered crystals and a few tiny, white spheres of Smithsonite that are nicely isolated and randomly distributed on the matrix. Both the yellow-orange Legrandite and the white Smithsonite display incredibly well on the medium brown hollow of Goethite matrix. An impressive Legrandite piece with rare associations! As for provenance, we obtained this after finding the "lost" collection of Minerals of Mexico book author, Bill Panczner, which had disappeared since the late 1980s. This was his personal legrandite specimen. It is unique and interesting, quite different from what you'd normally expect.
