Description
I am not normally big on this species, and few pyrolusite specimens ever really did impress us much. But this piece, with its big lustrous crystals in large clusters, IS impactful and I think important. It is complete all around and views nicely from all sides, though has some very minor damage (or contact) to some top crystals. Ex Phil Scalisi collection, and his label notes it is from the James Manchester collection (1871-1948). As a collector of German manganese minerals posting on MINDAT, Roger Lang has informed us that the locality of the pyrolusite such as this is Gremmelsbach, Triberg, Black Forest, Baden-Wurttemberg, Germany. He points to a small village, called Schonachbach, which could be confused with another place called Schonach (as written on the Scalisi label in error of transliteration). Both of these are in the area of Gremmelsbach, in ny case.Note I apparently paid too much for this, according to the Germans. well, we do not see many of them here - I cannot say as I have seen a single one. So, the price is now lowered below my cost
