An unusual style of Neptunite, the rare titanium mineral. Neptunite is best known, by far, for its occurrence at the famed California State Gem Mine in San Benito County, California. This is an extremely unusual cluster in that it is composed purely of Neptunite crystals. Dozens upon dozens of them in all directions, and many well over 1 cm and slender. Some are pristine, highly lustrous, and what seems to the eye as deep black. Parts of the cluster reveal the internal reddish color of Neptunite, in this case commonly revealed by etching. I've seen Neptunites in sparse clusters and moderate clusters, but not one quite like this spray. It is notable for its density and rare style, as well as being from such an important locality that is now closed. For reference, see The Mineralogical Record, Vol. 8, 442-452.
