This neat three-piece rough-and-cut set brings you the best of both worlds, capturing a network of sharp, jet-black needles of schorl tourmaline frozen deep within limpid, ice-clear California quartz. This set is a perfect example of how inclusions can enhance the beauty and mystery of a species, rather than being seen as a detracting flaw. It includes an interesting, visually pleasing polished cabochon slice that showcases a dense, rich forest of intersecting schorl needles frozen forever inside a polished window of crystal-clear quartz. The back of the slice is not polished, which creates a semitransparent translucency, unlike the front, which has been polished all the way through to show the clarity of the quartz. The back being semi transparent actually offers a nice, muted white background for the stark needles to jump out against—much clearer in focus than if it were clear. Both gems have been cut to strategically showcase the schorl inclusions and show the beauty. The round brilliant has a single schorl inclusion within, but it has been strategically faceted in the middle of the girdle to reflect against the facets and multiply into a radiating ‘starburst’. The vitreous luster of the quartz acts like slick ice, allowing light to catch the angles beautifully while highlighting the frozen mystery of the tourmaline trapped inside.
