An excellent and colorful Franklinite combination specimen from the historic Sterling HIll Mine in New Jersey. A pronounced, textbook modified octahedral Franklinite crystal sits at the apex of this profound piece and it is associated with Willemite, Rhodonite, Calcite and additional Franklinite crystals. This is a very good and very important combination specimen from Franklin given the associated minerals and their size. The Franklinite crystal at 2 cm (exposed) is superb with every face well developed and with sharp edges. The associated minerals are all subhedral in form so they are not well-formed, but they are very prominent and very colorful with the pink Rhodonite to 4 cm, white Calcite 1.5 cm, orange-red Willemite (var. Troostite) to 5 cm, green-yellow Sphalerite to 3.5 cm and scattered black Franklinite to 1.6 cm. It makes for an ideal Franklinite combination specimen. The Willemite fluoresces a neon green and the Calcite glows a bright red in shortwave UV. From the Richard Bostwick collection and previously on display at Sterling Hill Mineral Museum, in a special exhibition devoted to the North Ore Body. Dick was a mine foreman there, and a collector; and later a donor and contributor to the museum. His exhibit was a tribute to decades of hard work, and showed off the finest overall selection of NOB minerals in one place at the time.
