An excellent Franklinite specimen from the historic Franklin Mine at Franklin, New Jersey, which is the Type Locality for the species. A large, sharp, lustrous, nearly textbook crystal of Franklinite is prominent on this piece, along with several smaller accompanying crystals. The remainder of the piece is composed of granular to subhedral Franklinite mixed with a minor amount of pale pink Calcite. The sharp crystal measures 3.7 cm in maximum dimension with prominent octahedral and dodecahedral forms, so that it is very different than most simple octahedral crystals we have seen; and likely dates from old workings at the mine (early 1900s). The big crystal is set in a recess front-and-center on the piece associated with pink Calcite for great contrast. It is a well-composed and well-balanced piece and is significant for the district. The pale pink Calcite glows a bright red in shortwave UV. From the notable Franklin focus mineral collection of New Jersey native George Elling (and his label notes that he paid $4000 for it from someday named "pat").
