This is an important, large thumbnail-sized cluster of the finest quality of translucent, richly-colored, large crystals from the most important historic find of the species. The geometry and arrangement is sharp and geometric, space-filling. The color is vibrant in a way hard to convey in photos. The sharp crystals reach 1 cm in size. Veszelyite is a beautiful mineral species that only forms large crystals in a few places in the world. Modern (2020/s) production from China and Congo are new to the market. This example of one of the legendary classics of minerals from the USA, and best crystals of this species, were from only a few small pockets at this small copper mine in Montana. Now shut, there is no hope of more, either. Today, choice thumbnails seldom turn up for sale, only as old collections are dispersed. As of 2026 when this is going online, it is nearly 50 years out of the ground and counting. This is a refined and important, competition-level thumbnail specimen from the long-held collection of Jean Smith (founder of the Rocksmiths dealership which I grew up buying from, as did so many collectors of my own generation in the 1980s-90s). In fact, it was the best single thumbnail specimen in her extensive collection (500 pieces nearly) of thumbnails, mostly from the 1970s-90s. This is likely one of the best examples of an old Montana veszelyite that will ever turn back to market, and one of the few under multiple five figures in today's market valuations. There were too few, and they are zealously hoarded by those who have them.
