While Tsumeb might have more notoriety for its colorful Smithsonite specimens, a dizzying array of Smithsonites from Berg Aukas actually give Tsumeb a run for its money in some cases. Most famous among these are the unusual and visually dramatic, tan-to-butterscotch-colored epimorphs/casts. No one knows for sure what the original mineral was (Aragonite is but one suspect), but the rounded-to-stalactitic forms are instantly recognizable among mineral collectors, and came to market in the 1970s. Most unusual, and fascinating to look at in terms of thinking about how these formed, is that this fabulous cabinet-sized specimen is completely coated on all sides and edges by gemmy and lustrous mm-size Smithsonites. This form merges aspects of both casts and epimorphs, again without clear explanation. Weird and wonderful all at the same time. These were originally thought to be from Tsumeb in older publications and we see that on some old labels, but they are definitely from a distinguished find at Berg Aukas in the mid-1970s. Old material nearly impossible to find on the market today, these are true classics and highly desirable among Smithsonite collectors or fans of minerals from Namibia. The unusual aspects and overall quality are outstanding! This is an elegant, three dimensional example of this rare Smithsonite style.
