A GORGEOUS and unmistakable example of manganite from the type locality and premier locality for the species, the village of Ilfeld in Thuringia, Germany. These wonderful mineral specimens were mined in the mid-late 1880s, and their quality has never again been matched. Examples like these are prized amongst collectors for their large, striking crystals, their luster, and their rarity. This speciemn came with very old label from: W.J. Knowlton Natural History Store, 168 Tremont Street, Boston, Mass., USA; “Manganite, terminated crystals, Ilefeld, Hartz, No. 4830, 2.00” (according to MinRec Label Archive, this 48 x 73 mm, “Natural History Store” label was used 1878-1883)
