Hydroboracite with Gypsum var. Selenite
What a cracker of a Hydroboracite specimen! There have been debates online in recent years to try and establish from which locality the world's best Hydroboracite crystals were found. There are a few candidates, but occasionally the more recent Kohnstein quarry, Niedersachswerfen, Harztor, Nordhausen District, Thuringia, Germany gets mentioned, but always with the caveat that very few high quality specimens were produced. This small cabinet specimen is from Kohnstein quarry and is one of the few. It is so dramatic and intricate. The Hydroboracite crystals reach a staggering 3.5 cm in length. It is so sculptural, with a network of delicate bladed, colourless, glassy Hydroboracite crystals extending upwards from a small mass of Gypsum or Anhydrite. A world-class example of a very rare borate mineral.
