We are all familiar with Cobaltoan Calcite, the lovely hot pink cobalt rich variety of Calcite, which is from several DR Congo locations, however, Cobaltoan Dolomite is very rare, not only here, but worldwide. This gorgeous small cabinet piece of solid magenta color is one of the few large examples we have seen or had! Vibrant magenta Cobaltoan Dolomite crystals from 0.7 to an amazing 3 cm cover the showy, shallow, slightly curved display area that is coated by a druse of 1 mm Cobaltoan Dolomite crystals on a gray limestone-dolomite matrix. I believe it to be from old finds at this prolific locality and we found it in an old collection we acquired. It is is certainly one of the more vibrant colors in the mineral kingdom! The flattened translucent, rhombohedra are lustrous and sharp. They are dramatically distinct from the more modern occurrences of Cobaltoan Dolomite of different crystal habits (and smaller crystals) from both this mine and other localities in Morocco. This is a significant specimen for the material, and just plain "color shock" on a shelf.
