Stunning cherry red crystals with gem rough inside were a shock to the mineral world when they emerged the first time, in around 2010, into the mineral collecting world. We were stunned. Some of them were good enough to make the world's first large gems of rhodonite. Suddenly, rhodonite crystals were no longer rare, known only from old Aussie finds. However, the find dried up and we went nearly a decade in drought, before more have come to the market. I have seen larger crystals from the recent finds, but seldom gemmier and more transparent. This specimen, a large thumbnail or small miniature "toenail size" crystal, was from a parcel of gem rough that a friend brought to my attention at Tucson in 2024, and awaited a gem dealer to buy it for cutting! It is a shocking, robust, terminated cherry red crystal with probably 90 percent transparency; high level by any previous standard.
