Fluorite (Spinel-twinned)
This unusual locality specimen is strange in several ways - it is a relatively large and lovely pink Fluorite from Huanzala but is also twinned and crystal clear! It has a morganite-pink color and clarity, and is completely transparent - so much so that one is able to see the matrix on the back side right through the crystal! The twinning results in a complex morphology but the main crystal face is really unencumbered by growth interference other than some shallow growth hillocks around the edge of the main display face, which has a glassy luster. So, it is a really smooth front face that at first looks like a window inside. The edge crystal faces with their intricate growth features resulting from the twinning have a satiny luster. The back side of the piece also has a satin luster and is largely complete all around (there is only a modest conchoidal chip that isn't noticeable from the display front). The back and bottom show evidence of attachment to a Quartz-Pyrite-Sphalerite matrix and a bit of sulfides remain attached to help prove this is from Peru and not Pakistan. Overall, something very unusual! This came in an old collection and is difficult to date, but is certainly not of recent origin.
