Attractive thumbnail specimen consisting of a branching grouping of crystallized native copper. This is in good condition.
The Lake Mine, located near Mass City in Ontonagon County, Michigan, was operated by the Lake Copper Company and was active for a duration of 10 years, operating from 1909 until its final closure in 1919. Geologically, the mine is situated within the western part of the Upper Peninsula's famed copper range, targeting native copper deposits hosted in Precambrian Keweenawan-age volcanic and sedimentary rocks. The local copper-bearing lodes are associated with the region's ancient mid-continental rift system, where native copper precipitated within amygdaloidal basalt flows and interbedded conglomeratic strata.
