A stalactitic crystal grouping of rhodochrosite. In good condition. This is classic material for the species and locality.The Burgin Mine, located in the East Tintic Mining District of Utah County, Utah, was discovered in 1958 by the Bear Creek Mining Company (the exploration arm of Kennecott Copper) and achieved major production from the 1960s through 1978. Geologically, the deposit is a concealed replacement ore body formed where hydrothermal solutions interacted with Paleozoic limestone beneath the East Tintic thrust fault and thick volcanic cover. Mineralogically, the mine is well known for its complex base-metal sulfide assemblage alongside substantial zones of manganese carbonate. Rhodochrosite formed extensively during the early and productive stages of mineralization, occurring as a prominent gangue mineral and lining replacement zones that surrounded the primary lead, zinc, and silver ore bodies.
