This is an old European classic that is very rarely seen: once considered its own species, Sphärosiderite is now considered to be a microcrystalline, botryoidal variety of Siderite. A large small-cabinet piece, this specimen is classic, very showy, old-time combination material from the famous and historic Herja Mine. Composed of hundreds of intergrown, 2-4 mm botryoids of lustrous, translucent, honey-brown Sphärosiderite that are set on a near-rosette of gem-clear, beveled blades of Baryte, the more you look at this from different angles, the more you appreciate the quality and aesthetics. The Baryte terminations, where exposed, are shockingly colorless and glass-like. I have seen these pop up from time to time in old collections, but rarely, if ever, one as good as this one in terms of overall presentation and contrast on gem baryte.
