Chivor, the only private Emerald mine operating in Colombia, is known for its deeply-colored Emeralds that have a slightly different color than others, technically in the gem trade described as having a slight blue tone upon the green. The rich dark green crystals, up to 4.4 cm, are translucent with zones that approach translucent. This largest crystal is nicely terminated, and both large crystals have good luster that shows the numerous faces well. In classic hydrothermal growth for the Colombian Emerald localities, the Emeralds are associated with lustrous Pyrite and white Calcite, all on a dark shale matrix which makes for an aesthetic combination. The Emeralds also have a surprising, deep orange-red fluorescence. For a locality that essentially dates back to 1896, there simply are not that many good matrix Chivor Emeralds available. This may not be gemmy and transparent, but it would be $250,000 or more if it was, for the size and associations. It is not bright and sparkly, but it IS a wonderful display Emerald and about as good as you can get in a certain price range without breaking the bank, so to speak. This is a very showy display specimen in the size and for any price under multiple five figures, for this venerable locality.
