Brilliant green Dioptase and white Calcite together make up one of the great Tsumeb Mine's signature combinations; and yet truly fine specimens with quality and sparkle in both species, in aesthetic balance, are rare. Here, the rich layer of Calcites is composed of 3-4 mm rhombohedral crystals with uniform white color and pearly luster. This serves as an attractive background for the lustrous, deep green Dioptase crystals, which are gemmy and have the green electric fire that this so coveted. While most of the crystals average about 9 mm in length, there is one supreme crystal standing up from a pocket at one end of this small-cabinet piece. This major crystal is a very significant 2 cm in size, and the complete-all-around freestanding termination scatters the light beautifully, creating patterns of lovely green fire in the surface. This is a very fine example of this classic Tsumeb association and most likely comes from the mid 1980s finds here. Much better and more 3-dimensional in person as Dioptase is hard to convey in photos.
