Bunker Hill, an extensive polymetallic mine that was active for lead and silver mining in the late 1800s, has produced a wide variety of fantastic Pyromorphite specimens - strangely, all in the 1980s-1990s and not during its previous 100 years…and not since. This is a gorgeous lemon-yellow piece with rare saturated color, from the collection of the former mine owner Bob Hopper. I (Rob) personally bought it and much of his collection from him on several trips there in 2010 or so. He kept a personal collection in his office, from the 1980s-90s era. This is a somewhat unusual piece in form and shape: aesthetically perched on a matrix of small, yellow-green Pyromorphites is a dramatic ridge of much larger yellow crystals. Translucent and attractive, this ridge is composed of Pyromorphites that are uniformly just under 1 cm tall. The ridge culminates in a large, 3 cm crystal that is slightly hoppered. The habits and colors (the greens and yellows differ more than the pictures show) make for an unusual combination, and the aesthetic geometry rather reminds me of El Capitan in west Texas. The series of mines that comprise Bunker Hill rank among the world's best localities, if not the best, for this highly sought-after species, and this is a classic specimen from this now-closed mine; and from a great provenance to the mine owner.
