Sharp, lemon-yellow crystals of sulphur decorate this well-trimmed matrix specimen from an old mine in Italy. While a classic assemblage, this yellow-on-white usually shows off more textbook orthorhombic shapes of sulphur crystals. Here, we see a rare disc-like habit, called sphenoidal. The crystals are sharp, pristine, and to 2.25 cm. The matrix is made up of sparkling calcite crystals in the shape of earlier hexagonal aragonite crystals, which they have replaced. Although sulphur specimens in and of themselves are not rare, this particular piece is something special, and we cannot recall having another of this habit of crystallization that was so large, displayable, and beautiful.
