A rich, nearly solid mass of gemmy calomel crystals to a huge 7 mm in size, associated with minor cinnabar, makes this an important specimen! It is from Terlingua, Texas, an important and classic locale for this rare mercury chloride species that has produced some of the world's best specimens. These tetragonal, pyramidal crystals are a tan color and when admixed with a small amount of finely crystalline cinnabar they have a pinkish tinge. They can turn opaque if exposed to sunlight which is why they should be kept in the dark (as this one has). Lustrous crystals of this size and quality are most uncommon and are probably 100 years old, dating to the early 1900s up through the 1950s (with most of that time, protected from sunlight or any kind of light). This is a very rich and uncommon display quality specimen with large crystals for the species! From the Art Smith collection (Houston, TX).
