A remarkably aesthetic and SHARP (literally and figuratively) grouping of gemmy twinned calcites from the Leiping Mine in China. This mine has produced dozens of unique calcite styles, however this specimen comes from a distinctive find in the late 1990s which produced these now iconic “fishtail” or “butterfly” twinned calcites. This specimen is in incredible condition, and displays beautifully from numerous angles. The right side (as pictured) features a higher concentration of hematite inclusions, whereas the left exhibits gemmier clear calcites – which makes for excellent contrast. Highly desirable – these are some of China’s most coveted calcites. From the esteemed collection of Norm and Roz Pellman. Includes their label.

Calcite from Leiping Mine, China
from Leiping Mine, in the Leiping area of Guiyang County, Chenzhou, Hunan, is one of the unmistakable modern Chinese calcite styles: lustrous, sharp, often translucent to gemmy crystals animated by warm iron-oxide and hematite color. The best specimens do not rely on size alone. They have architecture—wing-like twins, stacked rhombs, spiky scalenohedral sprays, and multi-generation crystals where clear late calcite wraps or caps an older, rust-red included core.
