Spangolite with Brochantite
Spangolite is a beautiful species but one which only ever forms very small crystals. These, when viewed under magnification are wonderfully colourful - blue-green - have a distinctive lustre on their basal pinacoid face, and display enchanting tapering bipyramidal or truncated forms. Apart from industrial slag occurrences, of which there are many, the best crystals of this species are concentrated in mines around Bingham in New Mexico of which Mex-Tex mine is one. This larger specimen from David Hardman's collection from Mex-Tex mine consists of Quartz veinstone partially coated on some sides with acicular dark green Brochantite and on other sides with blue-green Spangolite. The Spangolite tends to be more concentrated around the edges of the specimen with crystals occurring within small cavities.
