This is a significant display specimen of Florencite-(Ce) on Magnesite from the Pomba Pit at Brumado, Brazil. The piece consists of numerous, gemmy to translucent, rhombohedral Magnesite crystals to 2 cm beautifully accented with a couple of large (for the species), light orange-pink Florencite-(Ce) crystals to 9 mm! This is huge for the species, and the association on an aesthetic display matrix is unbelievably rare to see. Florencite-(Ce) is a hydroxylated cerium-aluminum phosphate crystallizing in the trigonal crystal system and was named in honor of Dr. Guilherme (William) Florence, a Brazilian mineralogist. From the important magnesite deposits at Brumado, Bahia, Brazil that were discovered in 1939 and have been mined continuously since. This is probably from finds circa mid 1990s and the previous owner says it was obtained from the late Luiz Menezes in Brazil.
