Most Braunite comes from the manganese fields in South Africa and Namibia (mostly as a manganese ore) and this material from India is exceedingly rare, especially in great crystals like this. Braunite is a rare, di- and trivalent manganese silicate-oxide and this is an old specimen from India that turned up in a museum deaccession lot at the Rice Northwest Museum gift shop, perhaps from old material the Rices had bought decades ago. This lustrous, black, submetallic crystal is an inch across at its widest and is set on a piece of matrix of similar size as the crystal. The Braunite is a nearly complete, modified cube with sharp edges and the dark crystal is nicely perched on the contrasting light brown and whitish matrix. A handsome large thumbnail/small miniature size. This is an extremely significant example for the species and particularly for this locality!
