Smithsonite
The great locality of Tsumeb has produced the world's best Smithsonite crystals of so many styles, although most commonly the lovely, sharp rhombohedra that we know so well. Truly rare among euhedral Smithsonites are the elongated "pointed" crystals, both the sharp, needle-like tapered examples and the fabulous scalenohedral style such as this. This outstanding miniature is compose of one huge, 4.4 cm scalenohedron. The size and thickness are remarkable for the species, and the silky luster and gemmy interior are exactly what you would hope for. The light-yellow coloration is probably due to traces of cadmium, and the small amount of attached matrix provides a nice accent. This is an exceptional example of the material in size and aesthetic display. The absolute rarest styles of all crystallized Smithsonite - this gemmy scalenohedron is one of the largest single crystals I have seen. A great miniature, it is a classic from Tsumeb found in the 1960s and 1970s, sparingly. Dr. Erika Pohl-Ströher - 26621.
