Description
The Tree Root Pocket find of 1997 is literally the most valuable and the most legendary find of Colorado amazonite to this day. Specimens that are legitimate, trackable, and provable to this pocket are uncommon. I can recognize them generally immediately in-person from the color and style, but it is often hard to compare these to others from photos, online, for those who have not seen one in person. The color is just BETTER than all others: more consistent, more saturated, more deep, and with a surface like fine porcelain. Like most other large specimens from the region, everything of size is repaired and this is no exception, with a few clean lock-fit repairs (and no restoration!). The Tree Root Pocket was literally in pieces, preserved in one place but disrupted and dismantled by a huge tree growing into it, aside from geology itself. Put together, many pieces were flat plates as usual but some, such as this, had a more dynamic shape. Jack bought this because it was colorful and beautiful, and has owned it since he bought it in 1998 - making this one of the few to come up for sale of size and importance in a long time. Figure 57 on page #71 of Addicted to Beauty: The Legacy of Jack Halpern (Mineralogical Record, March 2025). Laszlo Kupi photo. Custom base included.
Known provenanceKnowing where your specimen comes from and who owned it adds to its story and value. Good provenance helps prove it's authentic and preserves important details about its discovery.
