Description
Hematite comes from so many localities but a few finds stand out, even among all of the rest. This is from a small find of what is generally considered to be the world's best pocket of Hematite collected around 2008 or so that stunned the mineral world when it came to market at the Tucson Show one year. Much of the pocket, rumor says, was purchased and hoarded by a black hole collector; and a major large piece is now in the MIM museum; and all others in major collections. They seldom turn up for sale. The Hematite is metallic jet black, not silvery like most, but really jet black, and so metallic and reflective! Specimens from this find really are the most lustrous examples of the species I have seen. The crystals are so brilliant and naturally lustrous, they dull even with a simple gentle touch of fingerprint. The crystals on this specimen are all pristine on the display face with the two largest measuring 3.3 and 1.7 cm in size. Interestingly, as a bonus, the small dark-black pagoda-like crystals with lesser luster, that set off the larger crystals by accenting them, are Hausmannite and is a new combination, and quite distinctive for the pocket and not seen since. This is an older specimen we sold at the time they came out, got back, and trimmed recently.
